Therapy Homework: Why the Real Work Happens Between Sessions

Fair warning: if you work with me, I'm going to give you homework. Not the graded, red-pen kind — the practical, try-this-in-your-actual-life kind. My clients consistently tell me it's one of the most useful parts of therapy with me, so let me explain why I do it.

You live your life outside the session

Here's the math: we might spend one hour a week together. That leaves 167 hours where you're out there living — dealing with your partner, your boss, your anxiety at 2 AM. If everything we do stays inside that one hour, we're renovating a house you never actually live in. Homework bridges the gap.

What it actually looks like

Nothing generic. It's tailored to you and what we're working on. Some examples:

  • Noticing patterns: jotting down when your anxiety spikes during the week, so we can spot the triggers together.
  • Trying a new response: using one specific communication tool in a real conversation with your partner — then telling me how it went.
  • Small experiments: testing whether that catastrophic thought actually comes true, and bringing back the evidence.
  • Building a habit: ten minutes of something that steadies you, practiced daily instead of discussed theoretically.

It's not about perfection

Didn't do the homework? That's data, not failure. Tell me what got in the way — that's often the most productive conversation we can have. I'm not grading you; I'm collaborating with you.

Why it works

Insight is great, but insight alone doesn't change much. Change comes from doing something differently, repeatedly, in the real world. Homework turns "we talked about it" into "I actually tried it." That's where the life-changing habits get built — one small practice at a time.

My whole approach is built on this: therapy isn't something that happens to you for an hour a week. It's a working conversation that equips you for the other 167 hours. The homework is how the tools become yours.
