"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." — Martin Luther King Jr.

Are You Struggling With Procrastination & Motivation?

If you keep putting off the things you genuinely care about — and then beating yourself up about it — that's not laziness. Procrastination is usually a feelings problem wearing a time-management costume. I'm Edward Davey, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist (RSW, MSW) — let's work on the real problem.

When You Care — But Can't Seem to Start

You know what to do. You've known for weeks. And yet here you are: reorganizing a drawer, answering unimportant emails, scrolling — anything but the thing. Then the deadline pressure finally does what motivation wouldn't, you sprint, you deliver… and you swear never again. Until next time.

Here's what most people get wrong: procrastination isn't a character flaw, and it usually isn't about the task. It's about what the task makes you feel — fear of failing, fear of being judged, overwhelm at the size of it, or a mood so low that starting feels like lifting a car. Avoidance buys relief for an hour and charges interest for a month.

I'm based in Orangeville and serve clients across Dufferin County — and with virtual sessions, anywhere in Ontario. Wherever you're reading this from, help is closer than you think.

How I Work With Procrastination & Motivation

My approach is collaborative and practical. First, we find what's actually underneath your avoidance — because the fix for fear is different from the fix for overwhelm, and both are different from the fix for a flat, low mood. No jargon, no judgment, and no “just try harder.” You've tried harder. Harder isn't the missing ingredient.

Then we build momentum the way momentum actually works: motivation follows action, not the other way around. Tiny first steps, if-then plans for your predictable stall points, and environments designed so starting is the easiest option. Your homework between sessions is small on purpose — reps you can actually win.

I'm strength-based, which means we also notice what already works for you. You've finished hard things before — under pressure, sure, but you've finished them. Our job is to build a system where you don't need the panic to get there.

What Sessions Look Like

First, We Map It

Early sessions are about finding what's under the avoidance — fear, overwhelm, perfectionism, low mood, or a task that needs breaking down. An honest look at the pattern, with zero shaming attached.

Tools You Can Actually Use

Then we build your starting system: two-minute first steps, if-then plans, time-boxing, and environment tweaks that make beginning easier than avoiding. Practiced between sessions, so they become yours.

Momentum Over Motivation

Over time, we stack small wins into real follow-through. The goal isn't becoming a different person — it's trusting yourself to start, because you've watched yourself do it, week after week.

All sessions are currently offered virtually, available anywhere in Ontario.

Signs Therapy Might Help

  • Knowing what to do — and still not starting
  • Waiting to “feel like it” before beginning
  • Last-minute pressure as your only fuel
  • Beating yourself up, then avoiding even more
  • Big plans, small follow-through
  • Busywork and scrolling instead of the real task

Common Questions

Isn't procrastination just laziness?

No — and the difference matters. Laziness doesn't care about the task. Procrastinators usually care a lot; that's exactly why it hurts. When someone avoids something they value and then feels awful about it, we're looking at fear, overwhelm, or mood — all of which are workable.

Could this be ADHD or depression?

Sometimes, yes — procrastination often travels with ADHD, depression, anxiety, or perfectionism. In our work we look at the whole picture, and I offer therapy for several of those patterns as well. If something clinical needs a closer look, I'll say so honestly.

Are sessions in person or virtual?

All sessions are currently virtual, available anywhere in Ontario. Many of my clients find it easier to open up from their own space — and there's no commute, no waiting room, no parking to worry about.

I've tried therapy before and it didn't stick. Why would this be different?

That happens more often than people admit, and it says nothing about you. My approach is collaborative and practical — we adjust together as we go. The free 15-minute consultation lets us both see if we're a good fit before you commit to anything.
