"Family is not an important thing.
It's everything." — Michael J. Fox

Is Your Family Struggling?

Families are complicated — even the loving ones. If your family feels stuck in conflict, silence, or old patterns nobody chose, family therapy gives everyone a voice and a way forward. I'm Edward Davey, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist (RSW, MSW), and I'll make sure every person in the room gets heard.

When Home Doesn't Feel Like Home

Every family has its patterns — the roles everyone falls into, the topics nobody touches, the arguments that start the same way every time. Most of the time, families muddle through. But sometimes the patterns stop working: everyone's talking past each other, someone's shutting down, and home starts feeling like the most stressful place to be.

It might be constant conflict, or it might be a cold silence that's somehow worse. A teenager who's closed the door — literally and otherwise. Adult children and aging parents navigating a relationship that's changing shape. Blended families finding their footing. Whatever brought you here, the fact that you're looking for help says something good about your family.

I'm based in Orangeville and serve families across Dufferin County — and with virtual sessions, anywhere in Ontario. Everyone can join from wherever they are, which honestly makes the logistics of family therapy a whole lot easier.

How I Work With Families

Here's my starting point: every voice in the room matters — including the quiet ones. My job isn't to decide who's right or to "fix" one person. It's to help the whole family see the patterns you're caught in, so you can change them together.

My approach is collaborative and practical. We'll name what's actually happening in plain language — no blame, no psychobabble — and work on real, usable changes: how you talk to each other, how you handle the hard moments, how everyone gets heard. You'll practice between sessions, because families don't change in an hour a week; they change at the dinner table, in the car, in the everyday moments.

And I work from your family's strengths. The love is usually there, even when it's buried under frustration. We dig it back out.

What Sessions Look Like

Every Voice in the Room

Early sessions make space for everyone to say what's really going on — including the family members who usually stay quiet. Being heard, really heard, changes the temperature of a family fast.

Spotting the Patterns

Together we map the cycles your family gets caught in — who pursues, who withdraws, where things escalate. Once you can see the pattern, you can start to step out of it.

Practicing a New Normal

Then comes the practical work: new ways of talking, listening, and showing up for each other — practiced in real life between sessions until they start to feel natural.

All sessions are currently offered virtually, available anywhere in Ontario.

Signs Family Therapy Might Help

  • Constant conflict — or cold silence
  • A child or teen shutting down
  • Blended-family growing pains
  • Big transitions: divorce, moves, aging parents
  • Feeling like strangers under one roof
  • The same old roles nobody likes

Common Questions

Who comes to family therapy?

Whoever's part of the pattern. Sometimes that's the whole household; sometimes it's a parent and teen, or adult siblings. We figure out together in the free consultation who should be in the room.

What if one person refuses to come?

It happens, and it's not the end of the road. We work with who's willing — and here's something families find surprising: when one person changes how they show up, the whole family dynamic starts to shift.

How much does family therapy cost?

A 60-minute family session is $200. Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario cover services from a Registered Social Worker — check with your provider. The first step, a 15-minute consultation, is always free.

How does virtual family therapy work?

Everyone joins the video session from wherever they are — no coordinating rides or finding a sitter for the little ones. All sessions are currently virtual, available anywhere in Ontario, and families often find it more relaxed than an office.
